Soft furnishings are the final layer of any interior, and they carry an extraordinary amount of responsibility. Curtains, upholstery, and fabric choices determine the acoustic quality of a room, its thermal comfort, and ultimately its personality. At Design Concept, our thread works division treats fabric selection with the same rigour we apply to architecture.
Three variables define whether curtains look luxurious or flat: how high they hang, how heavy the fabric is, and how much fullness (extra width) is used. The rule we follow: always hang curtains as close to the ceiling as possible, always specify enough fullness to create proper drape, and always choose a fabric weight appropriate to the room’s scale.
Floor-to-ceiling curtains in a generous linen or velvet — with enough fabric to pool slightly on the floor — create an instant sense of luxury that lighter, shorter alternatives simply cannot achieve.
When selecting upholstery fabrics, colour is only one of seven variables we consider: texture, weight, durability (rub count), light fastness, cleaning code, pattern repeat, and the way the fabric interacts with light. A fabric that looks beautiful in a sample book may perform very differently at scale in a real room.
